LRPG Anniversay Party & Annual Meeting

Ladies and gentlemen of the Lakeland Role Playing Guild and gaming community friends,

It is with great pride and excitment that I announce our Tenth Anniversary Party being held on Friday September 10, 2010 from 7:00PM until 11:30PM. We will be holding this big celebration at the club house of Carlton Arms South on Shepherd Road in south Lakeland.

Along with commemorating ten years as Central Florida's premiere RPG-focused gaming organization, we will kick off the beginning of our eleventh year (and second decade) of gaming and fellowship. There will be a review of how we started, where we have been and what we have accomplished. And we will discuss what we will be doing in the future, both near and far.

The main food course, primary beverages and a special dessert will be provided for the party by the Guild. We do ask, though, that some of our dedicated Members bring additional beverages, side dishes and munchies.

Along with the slightly formal meeting portion of the evening and the food and refreshments, we will be having fun with light and casual gaming. Family-style board and parlor games and relaxed card games will be the order of the night. However, if anyone wishes to engage in a more serious type of gaming event, that is more than welcome and there should be at least a few people willing to join in.

Our Annual Meeting & Anniversary Party always is a great start to the Guild's year but this particular event is going to be something special. Please join us as we close our first decade in high style and usher in a new and exciting second ten years! We look forward to seeing each and every one of you!

Peace, respects and good gaming,
Scott M. Presley

Novus Somnium for Year Ten -- Nexus City

At the end of May, the Lakeland Role Playing Guild will be launching this year's mini-series under the Novus Somnium banner!

"Nexus City" is a fantasy-flavored SteamPunk setting that features a few classic races and a lot of clockwork- and steam-powered technology. Magic has a place in the world but it is falling under the weight of logic and reason. Society struggles with the changes brought by industry and the growth of new class divisions. It is a setting of adventure, both action-packed and intellectual. Please visit the LRPG's forums for additional information about the setting.

Our preview night for this campaign series will be Friday May 28, 2010. We will host this event at the Unitarian Church on Troy Avenue in Lakeland, Florida from 7:00PM until 1:30PM.

We are looking forward to starting this new game series and we hope that you enjoy it.

Peace and good gaming to you all!

We're Nearing the Close of Year Nine

Greetings Guild Members and fellow gamers!

The LRPG is almost at the end of its ninth year and we want you to join us for the next two months of fun gaming and great friends.

In July, we have two separate game nights featuring the return of our in-house Apocalypse Over Lakeland Campaign, the continuation of a Guild Member's Spirit of the Century game series as well as the launch of another Member's Orphans of Atlantis adventure cycle.

In August, those two Member-run RPGs will continue while we also return to our in-house science fiction campaign Interstellar Overdrive. These game events will occur during that month's two regularly scheduled meeting nights.

And plans are being made for a painting workshop. While the exact date and time are to be determined, it will be held on a Saturday in the late morning to late afternoon.

For more information on these and other LRPG events, please visit our message boards and check out the Latest News forum.

Peace, respects and good gaming to you all!

Ready for Some Pre-Valentines Fun

For those readers who haven't had a chance to peruse the forum, we will have a number of tables available for those wanting to do some gaming. I, the Mage, will be running a World of Darkness game set in the 1920 gang land. Other guild members will be available to run a D20 version of Avatar, the last Airbender and a Science Fiction space epic using the D20 Modern Rules. Don't forget to check out the our website at www.lakeland-rpg.com or previous posts in this thread to find our when and where you'll want to be for the action.

An FYI, we do have children under the age of 18 so please no alchohal, and try to keep the swearing/knife fighting/the marking of territory using any bodily or otherwise fluids to a minimum.

Next LRPG Valentines Day weekend

A General announcement and reminder that next meeting will be February the 13th and this Mage for one intends to run a Bloody Valentines Day game. Come join the festivities and maybe even run a game if you have an urge too.

A Valentines theme would be nice, but if you just need someplace for you and your friends to get together and play rpgs, boardgames, or otherwise. We look forward to seeing you at the next meeting.

Until then, good night and good gaming.

Next Meeting Interstellar Overdrive

Next Interstellar Overdrive will have a table run by guild member Steve. Note that Steve wants players to create characters using the D20 Modern rules, so check the forum for the specifics you need to create your character. Guild Master Scott, may also be running a game, but as always check the forum for details.

Delays in updating here

Your guild Mage would like to apologize on the wait between writings here. While I have meant to write more here more often, I have found real life getting in the way. I will try not to allow this to be the case any longer. Those of you who read this that my readers will hopefully receive and rightly expect that I write more often on more gaming related topics, whether it be a new game I have recently played or a new website I feel deserves mentioning, or even an upcoming event that deserves your notice. So thank you for those that still stop by the homepage on occassion to see if this section has been updated. I appreciate your patience and your dedicaiton and hope to be worthy of both. Thank you and . . . Good Gaming.

New Lone Wolf Novels - Now Available!

The first in two brand new Lone Wolf trilogies are now available, direct from Mongoose Publishing as special hardback collector's editions. Bringing new tales from the world of Magnamund to life, these two novels are an action-packed and exciting introduction into the Lone Wolf series of gamebooks.

Dragons of Lencia - Book 1 of the Lencian Trilogy
The Kingdom of Lencia. For almost two-and-a-half millennia she has looked over the waters of the Tentarias towards the lands lost to her during the Darkdawn War. Now Telnac, King of Lencia, plans to launch a crusade against the Drakkarim of Nyras and restore his country to its former glory. Meanwhile, Warmarshal Ranghor of Darke, overlord of the Drakkarim nation, plans a conquest of his own. Heroes from across Magnamund will be drawn into this bitter conflict in search of glory and riches, but as the armies of two warring nations clash, they will soon learn that only pain and death await them in the land of the blue dragon.

Glory & Greed - Book 1 of the Rise of the Agarashi
The Telchoi. A race of survivors. Rising from the ashes of their lost civilizations, they have endured a thousand years as desert nomads. As resilient as the sands where they make their home, there is nothing they cannot endure. Nothing, perhaps, except the rising spectre of their past. Deep beneath the blistered earth, an evil stirs that has not yet satisfied its thirst for blood. When last it walked the face of the world, it brought down Avan-Telchos, the greatest city under the sun. Now, waking from its rest in the shadows, it seeks to finish what it started. Past and present are about to collide on the blood soaked dunes of the Telchoi. And if the children of the desert cannot succeed where their imperial ancestors failed, this ancient fire of evil may spread to set all of Magnamund ablaze!

You can find both books at the link below

Ard Boyz 40K Tournaments

PROVE IT!

Last year we asked the question, "Who is the best 40k player?" Over 5,000 people raised their hand. After the dust settled one man came forth, having crushed and humiliated the competition. Kevin Kirby and his army of Necrons (That's right, Necrons!) stood victorious.

Now we are asking again...Think you is da best? PROVE IT!

Fight your way through the locals in the Preliminaries on September 13th. This round will be held at Independent Retailers and Games Workshop Hobby Centers all over the country.

Players who end up in the top three will be invited to the Semifinals held in select locations on October 11th. Semi Final winners will get a 2,500-point army of a race of their choice and the top three players will be eligible to attend in the Finals, which are held in Baltimore on November 14th.

At the main event, players will compete for buckets of prizes, but more importantly, they will fight for the right to call themselves 'Ard Boys. So who will be the best this year? Are you pansies going to let a bunch of Necrons take the title again or do you think you can wade through the Drop Pods, Falcons, Stormboys and Fexes to claim victory?

A Turn of the Card (Part I)

Sample Material from Keys to the Supernal Tarot
Posted: 2008-11-13

The latest supplement for Mage: The Awakening hit the shelves just after Halloween and we wanted to give you a glimpse inside the pages, a new tool for adding artifacts, rotes, legacies and other elements to your ongoing chronicle.

Key X — The Wheel of Fortune
The Wheel of Fortune has changed form in the Tarot many times over the years, and its interpretation likewise varies. Common to most readings of the card, however, is the notion that fate can change on a dime, and that one’s luck is the province of factors quite beyond human understanding. Not surprisingly, the Wheel is often thought to mean that all of the vicissitudes of the human experience are ultimately meaningless, because the physical world must turn to dust and fall away eventually anyway (the follow-up lesson here, of course, is that only through God, or at least spiritual pursuits, can true happiness, salvation or self-actualization be found).

Another interpretation is that everything moves in cycles. What has been will be once again, and what is now shall be gone soon. This plays into the questions of destiny and reincarnation, of course, but another, more scientific viewpoint might be that everything in the universe is already present, and is in a constant state of changing forms. No “new life” is ever created, because the sperm and egg are alive when they come together. No matter or energy is ever created, they simply change forms. This is the Wheel of Fortune: not a grim caveat that everyone is just a wheel’s spin away from misery and death, but a solemn reminder that this, too, shall pass.

To a mage on the journey through the Tarot, the Wheel of Fortune can easily encompass both interpretations. Acanthus mages, especially, with their study of Fate, know that some events do seem to be predestined and that much of the world does run in cycles. They also know, though, that to call anything in life “random” is suspect, because every action must have a cause, which in turn was caused by something else. The lesson of the Wheel is one that needs to be acknowledged: Some things, by dint of destiny or just the immense complexity of the universe, are out of the mage’s control. Accept this, and move on.

Grimoire — The Book of Cycles The morality of magic has long been a point of contention among the Awakened. Some mages feel magic is a part of them, and has no more inherent moral complications than breathing. Some feel all magic is blasphemous, a crime against the natural order, and seek to murder those Awakened who would dare to use their gifts. Most mages are somewhere in the middle, and feel it is the application of magic that can require a moral distinction. Hubris is a problem for mages because they tend to overstep their boundaries, yes, but those “boundaries” are generally understood to reflect the limits of the power of Awakened magic in the Fallen World. For the boundaries to be literal ones — actual restrictions on what is and is not possible with magic — some reason would have to exist for those restrictions to be in place. If it is not possible, for instance, to teleport a man’s heart right out of his chest, why is that the case? Because Patterns are, on a certain level, impossible to disrupt? Perhaps, but why? Those questions are the true cornerstone of a mage’s journey into enlightenment, and to ignore them, to assume that one already has all the necessary answers, is the true hubris.

Mages have written volumes on the nature of magic, hubris and morality. Occasionally a faction uses such a book as its holy text, or at least its guiding principles. The Book of Cycles is a text that, on its face, is a long lecture about how using magic for any reason is dangerous and should be avoided. But buried within the book, some say, is a cipher that allows the mage that breaks it to read the cycles of fate, time and destiny on any level, from the personal to the universal. Those who believe the book exists, however, also say it is guarded by a faction of mages who, for the most part, abstain from magic — except to protect the book.

From The Ledger of the Awakened of Prague, 1842
Magus prob. of Italian origin, known among his people as Il Romano (“the Roman”), arrived yesterday. Requested information from Alae Draconis of Prague regarding “il libro di ciclos.” Local magi met in secret, voted to turn him out. Entered 28/2/1842, NM.

Il Romano arrived in Prague again today with his cabal. All Visus Draconis, all named for their cities of origin (?). Il Romano is leader. Demanded information about the book. Stated that great tragedy would befall Prague within 20 years if he was turned away again. Consilium voted to bar Prague to him. Entered 1/4/1842, NM.

Here in your Ledger I shall repeat myself. This city is doomed. The creature will walk again, rising up in a storm of thunder and lightning. All will be laid to waste, for its mark cannot be altered, not after it has completed its journey. It remembers and it hates, hates deeper than anything should. I can predict its path and prevent this, but only if I see the book, and I know your Mysterium knows something. You must provide me with what I seek, now, or suffer the consequences. I will not be refused again. Entered (no date), IR.

Il Romano left today after a closed meeting with Censor of Prague. Censor reports that Il Romano will not return to Prague, per the agreement, but that there is some merit to his warnings and information was provided commensurately. Entered 20/4/1842, NM.

Censor of Prague found dead today. Throat slit. Raped. No magic was involved. Petty thief and criminal, will soon be caught and brought to justice. Entered 21/4/1842, NM.

The Book of Cycles is, according to legend, a thick book with a blue binding. The paper and the binding set its creation at roughly 1810, but the type is more typical of the linotype press that didn’t come into use until the end of that century. Since the Ledger of Prague and other sources refer to the Book of Cycles as early as the 1840s, this casts some doubt on the blue-covered version being the original, since the typesetting machine used wasn’t invented until 20 years later. Then again, some mages feel that the grimoire might slowly change form in a cyclical fashion, moving from carvings on a wall to papyrus scroll to bamboo book to codex to bound book and so on. Following that line of thought, it might be a computer data file even now. Since the book hasn’t actually been seen by a living mage (with the possible exception of the book’s guardians; see below), it’s impossible to say for sure.

Mages who have studied the Book of Cycles, though, say that decorations on the book are always circular. Rings and whorls appear in the texture of the binding. If the text were viewed on a computer screen, all instances of a particular letter might be slightly offset, giving the impression that, for instance, the “e’s” were forming circles. If a mage views the book using Mage Sight from the Fate Arcanum, the book’s surroundings might seem to spin, as though everything in the immediate area were revolving around the book.

Guild Calendar Updated

The Guild Calendar for year IX. As always, make sure to check back occasionally as members recommend and request new events. Look for a new and interest events coming in the future.

:)

Also, a big thank you to everyone who was able to attend Hurricon 2008! Thanks also, to everyone at HMGS South for a wonderful convention. Much fun was had by all! I know that this has nothing to do with the schedule updates, but it was something this was just something that needed to be said.

The Guild Needs Your Help!!!!

We need to know what the membership wants for the coming year and in order to do that we need the members to speak up and answer a few questions for us. As you read the questions below, please keep a few things in mind.

1) We are all on a schedule, so don’t try and answer all of the questions unless you really want to. We’d rather you answer one question in depth, then answer every question with a one or two word answer.

2) Feel free to rant about something that has nothing to do with the questions shown below. Whether it is time, location, or a particular game/system that you want us to run or run yourself. Something that you wish we could assist with. If you never tell us, then we’ll never know.

3) Finally, because of the occasional potential for the gamer rants to get out of hand, we would prefer you to PM myself through the forum or send an e-mail to the guild at LakelandRolePlayingGuild@Gmail.com. Your answers will be kept confidential and I will simply copy and paste the body (Minus identifying items) of your e-mail into a word document, numbers by response to both this meeting and our next officer’s meeting for discussion.

With those things in mind, please review the random selection of questions below and rant away. (Yes, We are actually demanding to receive the gamer rant via PM’s, or E-Mails.)

What are we doing right? What are we doing wrong? Are the meeting nights still acceptable? What types of games are you playing? What types of games do you wish you had space to play? What the guild really wants to know is what you, the members and potential members, want from the guild experience? What can the guild do to improve your attendance at meetings? Or maybe meetings aren’t the problem. Maybe what you want is more guild-organized events. Give us the 411 on everything from meeting locations to general attitude of the membership/officers.

Again because of the in depth responses we are requesting we would prefer PM’s or E-Mails.

NINTH ANNIVERSARY PARTY AND ANNUAL MEETING!

Fellow Guild Members and friends,

Friday September 12TH, 2008 marks the start of our ninth year as the area's premiere gaming organization! We will be holding our Anniversary Party and Annual Meeting that night from 7PM until 12AM at the Unitarian Church on Troy Avenue in Lakeland.

Along with a quick recap of the previous year, we will highlight the coming year's events, discuss plans and projects for the near future, briefly look ahead to Year Ten and have some food and light gaming. (And we also will handle that pesky membership renewal business!)

I am looking forward to seeing everyone, espcially those of you who normally can't make it out on a regular basis. Please respond to the message board thread with your plans to attend so we can make proper arrangements for food and drink.

Peace, respects and good gaming to you all!

Location Notice

This is simply a reminder post that the August 8th meeting will be taking place at the Unitarian Church in Lakeland. Check beneath the Calendar for the address. The calendar will be updated and corrected as soon as possible. Your Guild Mage apologizes for the inconvenience and any confusion that this has caused.

This meeting will feature another installment of Interstellar Overdrive, though, as always, members are more than welcome to bring other games to run/play or use the location as a meeting place for their own tables.

Thanks in advance to everyone who can make it. The Guild looks forward to seeing you there.

Voting for the Ennie's now Re-Open!!!

Welcome to the ENnie Awards.

The Gen Con EN World RPG Awards (the "ENnies") are an annual fan-based celebration of excellence in tabletop roleplaying gaming. The ENnies give game designers, writers and artists the recognition they deserve. It is a peoples' choice award, and the final winners are voted upon by the gaming public at EN World.

The ENnies were created in 2001 as an annual award ceremony, hosted by the leading D&D/d20 system fan site, EN World in partnership with Eric Noah's Unofficial D&D 3rd Edition News. Since they were originally conceived the ENnies have expanded from an Internet-based awards selection to an annual award ceremony at Gen Con Indy. The ENnies have also branched out from their roots as an award ceremony focused upon d20 system publishers and products to celebrate the achievements of all tabletop RPGs and the publishers and products that support them.

With award categories recognizing the components that make a game great to the types of products fans have come to love, categories for fan-based websites and much more, the ENnies are the best way for fans to acknowledge outstanding effort from and to say "thank you" to the publishers, designers and artists who make this hobby great.

The Guild Mage (Ralph on the Forums) recommends checking out and maybe even voting on the Ennie's simply to see who is nominate. The Ennie's are a great chance to check out the best of products you may never have heard of.

Lakeland Role Playing Guild now has a Blog!

This week the LRPG activated and is now posting to its very own Blog on Blogspot.com for the majority of members this may not make much of a difference, but to the officers who wish to post news and those that wish to be informed about upcoming events this will make all the difference as now we are working on adding an RSS News Feed to our homepage so that members and those who simply want to be kept informed on the latest gaming news effecting Lakeland's gaming community can be kept up to date.

Sword & Quill Vol-2

The second volume of the sword and Quill is now available under the program. If you like what you see, sign on to the forum and make sure to tell us what you liked and how much you liked it. Of course, if there is something you think it needs or, even better, something you'd like to contribute, feel free. We are always trying to improve the types of things the guild put out and always appreciate the your feedback.

Sword & Quill Calls for Submissions!

Please think about submissions to the Sword and Quill. I would like to have an issue for the December party. Here are some ideas: Synopsis, summary, or teaser for your home campaign or PbP campaign. Review of rpg game, board game, miniature game, card game or book. RPG jokes or quotes Original fiction, artwork, or photos. Article of interest to gamers, such as on a new rpg feature, an online game, some tool that could be used for gaming. Or anything else you can think of that has to do with gaming or fantasy/science fiction. I look forward to getting some new contributors!

Wear'em If You Got'em!

Those of you who are attending the second meeting in October and were puzzled about costumes, puzzle no longer. The Halloween meeting will be costume optional, so if you wish you can. We look forward to seeing everyone at the meeting.

Second Meeting Confirmed! (revised)

This month has the LRPG with two meetings. Both dates and locations have been confirmed. The first meeting is on the 12th and will be at the Carlton Arms South. The second meeting this month is on the 26th at the Carlton Arms South. Though the calendar has seen some updates and changes, the venues will stay the same. The first meeting this month will be character creation for AOL. The second meeting, our Halloween Party, is going to include plenty of horror themed gaming, candy, and maybe even some movie fun. For more information on these events and more make sure to check out the forum. (The address for both locations can be found on the calendar page.)

Second October Meeting seeing changes

Because the UU Church is already has an event scheduled for October 26th the guild is considering either changing the date or switching the locations, so that the October 12th meeting will be at the church & the 26th meeting will be at the Carlton Arms. Stay tuned to this site & the forum's for updates concerning this and other breaking news. . .

We Return From Hurricon

Many of the member's of the LRPG have just returned from this years Hurricon. Hurricon was as diversified this year as ever. While the core of Hurricon is historical miniatures gaming, it was also loaded to the brim with roleplaying, board games, and other miniature games of all sort. If there was a particular type of game that you felt the need to play or just try, then Hurricon is your chance. Though for those member's who didn't make it and are kicking themselves for missing out on all the gaming goodness, don't fret. Recon '08 is fast approaching. LRPG Approved!!!

Many of our current members, and some of our new, have probably heard that The Guild has been in negotiations with the Unitarian Church to receive permission to hold our events at their facilities. This afternoon Guild Officers met with the church board and were there to witness the proposal be met with unanimous approval to hold future LRPG functions at the church. When you next see Guild Officer Laura, please thank her for putting The Guild in contact with the church.

Contact US?!?!

It has been brought to the attention of 'The Mage' that the contact us link is inoperable. E-mails are sent, but actually go nowhere. This has been the cause of some embarrassment on the part of The Mage and for this he is most apologetic and expects to have the Contact Us link up and working quickly.

Now Available: The Sword & Quill

The LRPG's news letter is ready and available under the archive. This years Sword & Quill will have a breakdown of the new schedule, the new officer's, and plenty of gaming news goodness. We are attempting for the 8th year of The Guild to release an issue every 3 months. Also, we hope to soon make available all past issues of the Sword & Quill. Thanks & we look forward to your feedback on the forum concerning The Guild's publication.
